With over a million people struggling with hunger and malnutrition in the Houston area alone, it’s difficult to fully comprehend the large scale of food insecurity. Awareness, education, and action are the first steps to addressing the issue – and the Houston Food Bank is at the forefront. The Houston Food Bank is a non-profit organization that collects and distributes food to hunger relief charities like food pantries and shelters across 18 southeast Texas counties.

Founded in 1982, the Houston Food Bank is a certified member of Feeding America, the nation’s food bank network. It was created to be a solution to both hunger and food waste, distributing 104 million nutritious meals through its network of 1,500 community partners throughout southeast Texas. Overall, the Houston Food Bank feeds over 800,000 individuals each year.

Last week, the Houston Food Bank suffered a tragedy after it was forced to throw out about 1.8 million pounds of food due to an ammonia leak that contaminated its refrigerated areas, an estimated loss worth $2.7 million. “We have about 28,000 square feet of refrigerated space in addition to the frozen space, and in one of the refrigerators, the fan caved into the actual unit itself and caused an ammonia leak,” Houston Food Bank President Brian Green told ABC13 KTRK-TV Houston.

With this disruption, the Houston Food Bank called out for help in the community to help restock the shelves after the misfortune and the community response was overwhelming. US LED was eager to join the relief effort and help them continue their mission to serve those in need, especially around the Thanksgiving holiday. Today, US LED dropped off nonperishable food and a cash donation.
